Salzburg - Sound of Music

Day one:

I took a quick bus ride to Salzburg this morning and arrive late morning. I had booked a Sound of Music tour starting at 2pm so I had a wonder around the town before it started.

This has to be one of the most magical tours I Jane ever been on. Salzburg is just breathtaking and now my favourite place I’ve visited. Lucerne is a close second followed by Florence.

Not only was I on a bus with other fans but we got to sing along to the soundtrack. The tour guide was outstanding and gave us so much behind the scenes information - even stuff I didn’t know.

We visited the lake and house where the family originally lives. However, they could not film it all at that location as the film needed a courtyard and parking area.

We then passed the church where the real Maria was a nun. We then went into the mountains where the opening scenes were filmed. Getting to the town (find name) we saw the church where the wedding was filmed in the movie.

After a bit of shopping we headed back into the town. We were then shown the garden but I decided instead to my hostel as it was getting late.

When I got there I found they didn’t take credit cards for buy food so had a 10 minute walk around the streets to find an ATM.

The day was topped off by Watching the movie itself. My hostel plays the movie every night at 8pm in a room with custom made benches. There was at least 20-30 of us jammed in there.

It was so amazing to see it again and I’m I’m guessing remastered quality on the big screen. I can assure you the movie is even better after the tour and now have the soundtrack playing in my head.

Day two:

After checking out I got caught in a rain storm but luckily I was expecting this so packed my umbrella. Unfortunately my shoes and socks go wet and it was like this for the rest of the day.

I went to the other side of the river first to visit the square. I had passed a group of school kids singing which was cute as many were dressed in their traditional costume.

I was wowed by the buildings and fountains. I then found a Sound of Music museum based on the family rather than the film. It was great to see some pics and found one of the couple on their wedding day.

I then continued around the square and found the children again along with at least 100+ other kids singing in the square. It started to rain again so stopped for some apple strudel - I’m making it when I get home! Like the Germans and Swiss they love apples. My favourite drink has been apple juice with sparkling water which you can buy at most conscience stores and supermarkets etc.

After the square I saw the bridge used in the movie plus the grassy area they sang along. The final place I visited was the gardens which again are breathtaking. They are a unesco site and I know why.

After such an amazing trip I headed back to Munich for two more nights before heading to Israel.
